This article in which Steven is quoted heavily is basically the same as the information posted on Club O's facebook page. At first I was afraid it was new bad news, and was relieved to see it was not.
Good news indeed, Christa! Thank you for chiming in. I almost didn't read the article.
"a new management company would have to emerge to operate Club Orient. Hopefully, most of the same staff will still be available and return." The moment that we can book a stay at the new Club O, we will do it. In the mean time, looking forward to the beach for Christmas/New Year.
wonder what will happen to perch bar "light" or the rental of chairs? my guess is only a large hotel chain can buy that property and i do not think that is good for us naturalists!
One can only hope that the resort will reopen to the same type of place the we have all come to love . Does anyone on this forum know anybody that owns the grounds that the resort sits on. Maybe if we could all get together or from some sort of group to talk to the owners about their plans. Couldn't imagine them not wanting to rebuild. I remember when Sorobon Beach Resort was sold to the people next door. I felt like I had lost part of my family, now this has happened, I feel even worse. Lets do what we can to make sure Club Orient returns to the wonderful place that its was before.
I remember previous discussions about the advantages and disadvantages of buying a unit at Club O. One of the disadvantages is that there is some ownership dispute that prevents getting a clear deed. I don't remember the details, but someone long ago didn't properly sign off on selling the land and clearing it up would require tracking down many heirs across the world.
I'm hoping this legal uncertainty will keep them from selling the property.
The one thing that we CAN control is to continue nudist use of the beach at Club Orient. This maintains the traditional use of the beach as a nude beach which sets up precedent in the French legal system.
I hope so. There was traditional nude use of ALL of Orient Beach until the island government decided to ban it anyway.

Yes, evidently this is important under French law. My husband and I will continue to do our part to keep it nude.

Well, the problem with that theory is that the part of Orient Beach north of Club O hadn't been nude in years. We started going much later than many of you here, but by our first trip in 2002, there was no nude use of the beach north of Club O, other than possibly early morning walkers. We stayed mid beach for two trips and never saw anyone nude.

I was surprised at the prudish American women who put their tops on to go in the water or to walk down the beach. Honestly, they would be sunbathing topless, and put their top on before they got off their chairs to walk to the water, down the beach or to one of the beach bars. I said, "The hell with that." My top was off when I was on the chairs, when I went in the water, when I walked down the beach toward Mt. Vernon or to Club O, or when I went to one of the beach bars. The American women didn't like it, but too bad. Its's my vacation too. You enjoy yours and I will enjoy mine. If it really bothers you, go back to the US.

Those were the dark days before we were brave enough to stay at Club O. Then I just went naked all the time. A liberating feeling. Thank you, Club O.

So, my point is that nude use of Orient Beach had ended long before the rules changed. Hopefully we can keep the Club O property nude until clean up is finished and rebuilding is complete. Wow! That might be a very long time.
I guess it varied with who was on the beach at the time. My first visit was July of 2002 and I saw people nude on beach chairs North of Pedros mid day along with people, including myself, walking the beach nude at any time of day. I have shopped at Adam and Eve Nude. Pedro's and Andy and Cheryl's were known for allowing nude diners.
There was a man who was known for bringing a group of a dozen or so women to Orient Beach several times a year. They would be nude all the time and walk the entire beach.
I just saw photos of construction happening at the Perch--additional deck area. I hope it remains a nude use place. I was taken aback by all of the fully clothed people hanging 'round.

There are limited food options on the beach right now, I'm sure that brings textiles to the perch. I'm glad to hear they're expanding, that's consistent with staying open. :)
On the topic of previous nude use of the entire beach: There was a "No Nudists" sign, with a drawing of a nude couple, at Mont Vernon in '02. The huge sign as you leave Club O property went up much later, after the island government shut down Esmerelda's nude section. I think the change was about the time Disney cruises started visiting the island.

Agreed. We have seen nude use of Pedro's, Cheryl and Andy's, the shops in that area, Coco's (The Es) and nude morning walkers, but never anywhere else. Granted, we have spent little time on the non nude portion of the beach, but we have done walks down the beach, and stayed mid beach our first two years. My point is, the mid beach area had little if any nude use from the time we started going there until the government shut it down. That proves the adage: "Use it or Lose it."

Now if we can just keep the Disney cruise ship crowd away from Club O beach.
On my first visit, the nude use of the mid beach area was mostly people walking. When I was walking North of Pedros in the early afternoon, Several of the beach chair vendors tried to rent me a chair, so even if 99% of the people were clothed, no one seemed to object to nudity.

I miss those days.
