The public is still not allowed onto the barrier islands of New Jersey as of this writing. The devastation is beyond imagination. The New Jersey shore of my youth is gone. The boardwalks and amusement piers have been smashed, the giant roller-coaster lies crumpled where it fell into the Atlantic Ocean. Thousands of homes have been damaged or swept away. The streets are clogged with boats torn from their moorings, and entire neighborhoods and under several feet of sand. From what I have seen, it will take years to rebuild. As soon as possible, this Summer perhaps, I will cancel my plans to visit the Carribean, and go the the "Jersey shore" to spend my vacation dollars, and anything else I can do to bring it back to it's former glory.
