My wife has the same Irish fair skin. She uses 100spf and it works great. She has spent plenty of consecutive days on the beach with nothing but sun block and umbrellas. Do be sure to cover every bit. One year she missed the top of her feet and the burn was incredibly swollen--she couldn't get her sandals on!
I used 4spf last time. No problem with sunburn. My problem is that I forget to flip over and I wind up looking like a black and white cookie.
We'll be down for Christmas/New Year--I'll be sure to post a report.
Hmmmm You must be from New York. I LOVE black and white cookies but once you leave the NY metro area they just ain't the same. Brought up on Long Island there's so many things that just aren't the same. Now living on Florida, we have black and white cookies but it's name only. Icing isn't hard and cookie isn't cake like.

We're Detroiters, we just spend a lot of time in New York--Manhattan. Peaches, my wife, is a Curator/Art Historian. We look forward to the black and white cookie every trip. There's nothing like that cookie sometimes.

Well we made our second trip to the beach today. Isaac has passed but there was still some lingering rain and wind. Got there around 1130 and it had been raining earlier and the skies were overcast. Waited at the perch lite with a few others that were waiting out the weather. A few minutes had passed and we went out to the waters edge and took up the chairs. No ships in port and the remnants of Isaac still in the area must have kept them away because when we left at 3 PM there was a total of about 10 people on the beach. Intimate setting was kind of good for us newbies anyway. Will be back soon we hope.

By now the Yellow Submarine should be finished and it should be open. When we were there three months ago it was looking as if it would be finished in a month or two.
Hopefully we will get more updates from board members to get a more accurate report of the current situation. I hate to think things are the way you have described them; that would be very bad news. But I realize things change, and progress goes in spurts and stops.
We were in loungers rented from Pedros (didn't even dawn on me that the chairs weren't the normal white and orange strapped ones until I noticed our umbrella was maroon) and walked all the way down to Papagayos. It was a very slow day, hopefully it was slower than the rest of the days around it. We even walked through the Club O property and found what was left of our favorite mini suite (156)

Life's a beach!
We only had one ship (ours) the day we went, so that could be part of the numbers being down for us as well. Of course, it was the Oasis of the Seas with 6100+ passengers, just not many who were adventurous enough to go to the nude beach.

Papagayos and a beachfront in 2018:
Thanks for the photographs. Yes things still look the same as when we were there in June.
The chalet in the photograph next to Papagayo is Waterfront #47. It was our favorite. We have stayed in all of the waterfronts at one time or another except the one taken out of the rental program, number 50 I think. A few we have stayed in twice.
The beachfront chalets start at about #54, and are farther from the water. I should have phrased that in past tense, as they are gone now, with just a foundation or perhaps a shell remaining. Really makes no difference at this point.
